World's Strictest Parents' Summer Survival Guide
Cliff and Lisa Bolton, the World's Strictest Parents, are sharing their tips to help parents get ready for summer survival mode. "Just because it's summer doesn't mean it's a free-for-all for everyone," Lisa says. "It's life, it just continues on, so you have to have some structure along with structure-free time."
How can I keep my kids academically challenged during the summer?
"Let your kids pick some books and read with them," Cliff suggests. "Kids love us to be involved to a certain point, and then there are others areas where they don't want us around, but sitting around in the evening time reading a book with your kids? They'll love it."
Lisa adds, "And it can be stuff that interests them. Sometimes we get stuck on the novels that they have to read and write an essay - but maybe let them pick a magazine, like Every Day with Rachael Ray - we call it, 'teaching across the curriculum.' Have them figure out a recipe, give them a budget, they go to the store, they pick the ingredients, they're doing fractions, they're doing math, they're having to read - they're learning even though they're having fun. As parents, we never have the summer off, so it's restructuring [learning] so that it's fun and gets the kids excited about getting back into school."
