Chad Fell, the world record holder for the largest unassisted bubble blown from chewing gum, offers some lessons on the art of bubble blowing.
More Tips from Chad
When did you first know that your bubble-blowing abilities were above average?
In high school, I always enjoyed chewing gum, and my bubbles would always be better than anyone else's. But it was just a hobby, really. Then later on when I became a journalist reporting on local high school games, I would blow bubbles on the sidelines. Soon everyone started cheering me on -- the fans, the players, the cheerleaders -- and they started calling me the Bubble Man.
How did Guinness become aware of your ability?
I contacted them in 1998 when I first attempted the record, but I didn't have the proper measuring device. A few years later I told Dubble Bubble my story and they sent me a 10-pound crate of gum and an official Dubble Bubble measuring device. To set the record (according to Guinness rules), I had to submit a video tape of myself blowing the bubble, with several credible members of the community as witnesses. The mayor was there, a circuit clerk, some bankers. I could use no more than three pieces of gum and I had to hold the bubble (with my mouth, no hands allowed) for a full five seconds. A year after I submitted the tape, Guinness sent me a certificate proclaiming me the holder of the World's Record for Largest Unassisted Bubble.
What's your preferred gum for blowing bubbles? Do you ever use sugarless gum?
Dubble Bubble is the only brand I recommend for blowing large bubbles. I never use sugarless gum; the texture isn't right. Nonetheless, I've never had a cavity in my life!
