Surely you know that sunscreen is important for the face and body—but have you ever thought about protecting your hair from the sun?
According to celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson, your hair needs sun protection, too.
"I think that girls don't think about sunscreen for their hair, ever," Ted says. "They think about sunscreen for their face, their arms, their hands—but they never think about it for their hair. I'm going to tell you a little secret of mine for something you can do at home to create sunscreen for hair."
"Especially for girls who color treat their hair," he explains, "this is really important."
HOW TO DIY SUN PROTECTION FOR YOUR HAIR
What you'll need:
- About a tablespoon of organic coconut oil
- About ½ cup of water
- Juice of ½ a lime
What to do:
Mix the coconut oil, water and lime juice well in a bowl and microwave for 10 seconds. Transfer the mixture to a spray bottle. Apply the mixture directly to your hair and scalp. Make sure it's completely saturated.
"You can comb through it if you want to," Ted explains. "I love to use a wide-toothed comb just to make sure everything's saturated. But if you're on a time constraint, you don't have to do that."
If you're not a DIYer, Ted says, you can always find products that have UV filters in them—like his Shooting Star Texture Meringue, which can be applied directly to your hair with your hands. Watch Ted demonstrate in the video above.
