Sunny Anderson's Pumpkin Pie Latte

1 cup light brown sugar
1 cup water
1 cinnamon stick
1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
3- to 4-inch orange rind
Strong coffee or espresso
Warm milk, frothed with a whisk or with a milk frother
Whipped cream, for garnish, optional


Combine sugar, water, cinnamon stick, pumpkin pie spice and orange rind in a saucepot over medium-high heat. Once the sugar dissolves and the syrup comes to a bubble, remove from heat, strain and cool.

To serve, pour desired amount of syrup into a mug, top with strong coffee, warm milk and foam.

Store leftover syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
