Did you know that the average American eats three pounds of sugar in a WEEK? And over 150 pounds of sugar in a YEAR? That’s according to Dr. Ian Smith and in his new book Blast the Sugar Out, he has something to say about it. He claims that if you follow his plan you can lose 20 lbs in five weeks and lower your blood sugar.
HOW MUCH SUGAR SHOULD YOU BE EATING?
Dr. Ian says women should consume no more than 100 calories (about 25 grams) of added sugars per day. Most men should consume no more than 150 calories (about 37.5 grams) each day.
That’s about six teaspoons of added sugar a day for women and nine for men.
WHAT ARE SOME GOOD LOW-SUGAR MEAL IDEAS?
Breakfast: 1 cup of oatmeal with ½ cup skim, fat-free or reduced-fat milk; ½ teaspoon honey
Power Ups: 1 slice of whole-grain toast w/ ½ teaspoon of sugar-free jelly
Lunch: grilled chicken salad (2 cups mixed greens with 3 ounces of skinless diced chicken; 1/3 cup chopped bell pepper; 1/3 cup chopped onion; 5 cherry tomatoes; 1/3 cup shredded carrots; 2 tablespoons of fat-free, light salad dressing)
Power Ups: 1 small apple
Snack: 40 goldfish crackers
HOW TO TEST YOUR BLOOD SUGAR
Dr. Ian says you want your blood sugar to be 140 or less. To find out your number, see your doctor, or pick up a finger-prick device at your local pharmacy and test your blood -- it only takes five seconds to give you a reading. Watch the video below for a demonstration.
