Ingredients
- 1 750-ml bottle red wine (anything dry and not sweet will do)
- 2 medium-size oranges, divided
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 cups apple cider
- 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
Yield
Serves: 6-8
Preparation
Pour wine into a medium pot over medium heat.
(Note: Mulled wine can also be made in a slow cooker by adding all ingredients to the slow cooker and setting it on high for 2 hours. If hosting a holiday party, make a double or triple batch in your slow cooker and keep it warm on the warming setting all night!)
Using a vegetable peeler, peel the skin off one orange, being careful not to take too much of the white pith with the skin. Add the orange peel to the wine. Slice the peeled orange in half and squeeze juice into the wine. Add the squeezed orange to the pot along with the cinnamon stick, apple cider, and honey. Stir to combine and heat for 45-60 minutes until the flavors combine, making sure it never comes to a boil.
To serve, carefully strain out the orange peel, orange, and cinnamon stick. Slice the remaining orange into thin slices and pour wine into mugs, garnished with an orange slice.
