Viewer Ann wrote to us in a panic because her daughter Christina’s bedroom was so chaotic and littered that the 21-year-old recent college grad had taken to sleeping on the floor in her younger brother’s room. Organization expert Peter Walsh stepped in to turn things around for the family.
“For a lot of people, clutter just accumulates over time and it gets to the point where it’s so overwhelming that you don’t know where to start,” Peter said of the massive piles of stuff that were overtaking Christina’s room.
He tasked the young woman with sorting all of her belongings into three categories: Keep, Donate and Trash. The advice he gave her is helpful for anyone feeling overwhelmed by their belongings, “Every 5 years you need to completely reassess everything that you own, and let go of things you no longer need, use or want,” Peter said.
For the things that are meaningful to Christina, Peter encouraged her to give them a place of honor: “Take the things that are important and display them in a way that make it really wonderful and happy for you.”
Watch the video above to see the amazing transformation from a room that Peter called “terrifying” to a serene retreat. Peter also shared three organization tips that anyone can use. Check out the video below to learn how to repurpose dresser drawers into shelving, turn a wine rack into a purse organizer and camouflage your internet router with a classic book.
