Spicy Mezcal-Grapefruit Margaritas

Ingredients
For the Grapefruit Simple Syrup:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 2 2-inch pieces grapefruit rind
- 1 jalapeño, sliced in half
For Margaritas:
- 1 1/2 ounces Mezcal
- 1 ounce grapefruit juice
- 1 ounce grapefruit simple syrup
- 1/2 ounce orange liqueur
- Salt, for the rim (optional)
- Lime slices, for garnish
Preparation
To make the simple syrup, place ingredients into a saucepot and bring to a boil. Once at a boil, turn off the heat, remove the grapefruit rinds and jalapeño and let cool.
Run a lime wedge around the edge of a glass then dip it in salt to salt the rim. Fill the glass with ice and set aside.
