Men looking to spruce up their skincare routine, look no further. Rach and her husband, John, share their dermatologist, Dr. Anne Chapas, and she's back to share her favorite products for men's skincare—for day and nighttime skincare routines.
The first important thing to understand, she says, is that men have very different skincare needs than women. Dr. Chapas breaks it down:
1. Men Have More Oily Skin Than Women
"Because of the testosterone, which stimulates more oil," explains Dr. Chapas. "So they need to stick to lighter formulations like gels and hyaluronic acid, rather than rich creams," she adds.
2. Men Tend to Complain of Puffiness
"Everything in men's skin is bigger—muscles are bigger, fat pads are thicker, and skin is thicker, so it is more prone to showing puffiness. And unlike women, men don’t typically wear makeup to cover that up, so having good skin is how they can look more youthful," Dr. Chapas explains.
3. Many Men Have Facial Hair
As you could imagine, facial hair drastically changes the skincare on the face. "Men need things that are clear and blend in quickly in hairy areas. And they’re dealing with irritation and things that happen with shaving," she says.
4. Men Need to Protect Their Ears
"You wouldn't believe the amount of skin cancer I see in men's ears. Most women have hair to protect their ears, and most men don’t, so their ears are exposed. So be sure to put sunscreen on ears, and on the top of your head if you're losing hair. The good news is, hair is protective, so if you have a really dark, thick beard, there’s some melanin in that that’s protecting the skin," Dr. Chapas adds.
So, as far as her recommendations for the a morning skincare routine for men, Dr. Chapas keeps it simple.
Morning Skincare Routine for Men
1. Start By Cleansing the Skin
"Skin can be sensitive in the morning because of shaving, so you want to look for products that aren't irritating or greasy. Start by cleansing with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser like CeraVe or Cetaphil," Dr. Chapas says.

2. To De-Puff, Try Eye Rollers
"In the morning, people can be really puffy. So, eye rollers are going to be one of the best things to reduce the puff. You want to put them from the middle of your face, outwards because that is how the lateral fluid removes from our body," she explains.

3. Protect Your Skin with Vitamin C Serum
"Vitamin C serum will protect against stress and pollutants you encounter throughout the day," adds Dr. Chapas.

4. Keep It Light with a Moisturizer
"Hyaluronic acid is great because it’s not greasy. My favorite is Neutrogena HydraBoost. It absorbs quicky like a gel but moisturizes like a heavier cream," she explains.

5. Don't Forget Sunscreen
"So many guys accumulate damage because they don’t wear sunscreen. I like Elta Clear, but you want to look for one that has micronized zinc. Not the pasty, white zinc oxide. It should have very small particles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. This will blend into skin better, and won’t show in bearding areas, and it’s not greasy," Dr. Chapas says.

As for a night skincare routine, men definitely get off a bit easier than women.
Night Skincare Routine for Men
1. Start By Rinsing the Face with Water
2. Then, Add a Retinol Cream
"Retinol cream at night [should be added] to any areas prone to fine lines, pigmentation, and acne. A lot of men still deal with acne into adulthood," explains Dr. Chapas.

3. Always Moisturize
It can be the same hyaluronic acid used in the morning routine. I find guys aren't usually interested in a lot of steps or flowery products, so the simpler we can keep it, the better," she says.
